Luo Wenzao

Luo Wenzao, born in Fujian Province in 1617, was the first Chinese bishop. He received baptism and converted to Catholicism in 1633. Twenty-one years later, he became a priest. In 1677, the Western Church sent two bishops to China to be responsible for the missionary in the southern and northern parts of the country. One of them was Luo, who was in charge of the missionary work in the north.

In 1685, China had only 4 bishops, with Luo being the only Chinese.
